Nitra is considered to be the oldest city in Slovakia. At first it was just a city settlement and later the settlement became the Nitra principality. Many historical monuments and buildings have been preserved to this day, and thanks to them, this beautiful city attracts many tourists every year.
1. Dražov Church
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel, or Dražov Church, is the oldest Romanesque church in Slovakia. It was built in the 11th century. You can find it in the Dražovce district. It offers a wonderful romantic atmosphere with views of Nitra and the surrounding area. According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared here looking at the walls of the church. The villagers then realized that they had left the church in a dilapidated state and so the church underwent several reconstructions.
2. Zobor hill-Nitra
Zobor hill is situated over the town of Nitra and although it does not belong to Slovakia’s highest peaks, it is the highest among those in the Tribeč mountains. From the top of Zobor you have an amazing view of the city of Nitra and its surroundings and in addition, Zobor is a great place for a tourist trip. You will find a number of routes there, including an educational trail and there is also a so-called Svorad Cave.
3. Nitrianska Calvary
In Nitra you will also find a nice calvary, which is definitely worth a visit. Located on a rocky hill, it offers panoramic city views. There is also a nice chapel on the hill, and the Calvary is just a 10-minute walk from the town center.
4. Nitra Castle
Nitra has also earned the nickname of the Slovak Bethlehem, and it is at the Nitra Castle that the bishop’s office is located. This castle dominates the city and can be found in the historic center. During your visit you can see the beautiful castle chapel, but also go out (with a guide) to the castle tower, from where you will have an amazing view of the whole of Nitra.
5. Pribin Square
Pribin Square is the main square in the city center situated at the entrance to Nitrianks Castle and is dominated by the famous bronze statue of Pribin. On the corner of the square you will also find a statue of Corgoň, holding a building beam.
I firmly hope that you liked the article and if you are interested in Nitra and you are also thinking about visiting some other city in the area, I definitely recommend the capital Bratislava or Banská Bystrica.
