I guess everyone knows the legend of the mythical Atlantis, a country hiding somewhere in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. But did you know, that there are many theories that claim that Atlantis is the Greek island of Santorini?
In this article, I would like to introduce you to this beautiful island. Give you some tips and advice on how you can organize your trip to Santorini, and at the same time I describe my own experience from this beautiful island.
Santorini as a volcanic island
Maybe you did not know that Santorini is actually just the rest of the volcanic island. Created after an extremely destructive explosion in 1600 BC., which formed a wave of up to 150 meters, which hit Crete. The eruption of this volcano is to be repeated one day. Fortunately first in several centuries. So luckily we have nothing to worry about yet.
Favourite tourist destination
It is one of Europe’s favourite holiday destinations.It is located on the border of the Aegean and Cretan Seas. You can get there by air and spend any number of days. Personally, however, one day came quite sufficient. Santorini is more interesting tourist destination than holiday destination and because the island is relatively small, tours do not last long.
Trip to Santorini from Crete
If you happen to be on one of the nearby islands, such as Crete, you can easily get there by boat. Usually, catamarans (boats on two skis) are used for such one-day tours, I note that such trips cost around 150 euros / person and the catamarans lean side to side, causing the toilets to be full of returning people. (I hope you are not eating right now). Nevertheless, a trip to Santorini is worth it!
After arriving on the island
You can admire beautiful houses with blue roofs and tourist buses will guide you through the main villages of the archipelago. The most important is the island and the village of Thera. Most of the photos you saw from Santorini come from this village.
Some intresting facts about Santorini
During the tour you need to find out a lot of interesting information not only about the origin of the island, but also about
- where on the island Angelina Jolie has her own villa
- that the water on the island is drinkable
- that the locals have money in addition to tourism
- white wine production, as the volcanic soil retains water and is therefore suitable for cultivation.
